A Perfect Day on Fitzroy Island
Snorkelling, hiking, and relaxing in paradise – just 45 minutes from Cairns
Looking for the ultimate tropical escape? Fitzroy Island is one of the best day trips from Cairns—where the rainforest meets the reef. With crystal-clear water, coral beaches, walking trails, and vibrant marine life, Fitzroy offers something for everyone.
Whether you’re travelling with family, your partner, or solo, here’s how to enjoy a perfect day on Fitzroy Island.
Morning: Getting There
Start your day with a scenic 45-minute ferry ride from Cairns. The journey takes you across the Coral Sea to the island’s protected Welcome Bay. Most ferries depart by 8:00–9:00am, giving you a full day to explore.
Top Tip: Book your ferry in advance—especially during school holidays or weekends.
Mid-Morning: Snorkel the Reef

Once you arrive, grab your snorkelling gear and head to the fringing reef right off the beach. The waters around Fitzroy are teeming with tropical fish, soft and hard corals, and even the occasional sea turtle. The best snorkelling spots are around Welcome Bay and Nudey Beach.
Need gear? You can hire snorkelling equipment on the island or as part of a tour package. Stinger suits are also provided in season (Nov–May).
Lunchtime: Foxy’s Bar & Cafe

After your swim, head to Foxy’s Bar for a cold drink and a bite to eat. This laid-back beachfront bar serves burgers, wraps, and local favourites—with live music on select days and ocean views every day.
You can also pack your own picnic and relax on the grassy foreshore under the palm trees.
Afternoon: Explore the Walking Trails

Burn off lunch with a walk through the island’s lush rainforest. There are several trails to suit all fitness levels:
- Nudey Beach Track (1 km return): A short, scenic trail to one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches
- Secret Garden Track (1 km return): A peaceful rainforest loop with interpretive signs
- Lighthouse Road (3.6 km return): A rewarding uphill walk with panoramic views across the reef
Top Tip: Wear sturdy shoes and bring water if tackling the longer hikes.
Bonus: Visit the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre

If time allows, visit the Fitzroy Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, where rescued sea turtles are cared for by volunteers. Guided tours run most days and help fund turtle conservation.
Late Afternoon: Relax Before Departure
Finish your day with a final swim or simply relax on the beach with a good book. Ferries return to Cairns mid-to-late afternoon, leaving you refreshed and sun-kissed after a tropical day in paradise.
