Two of Cairns’ most beautiful day-trip islands — but which one is right for you? Here’s an honest side-by-side comparison to help you choose.

Fitzroy Island vs Green Island at a Glance
Both islands sit within easy reach of Cairns and both offer world-class snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef — but they feel quite different once you arrive. Fitzroy Island is a rugged, rainforest-covered continental island with walking trails, a lighthouse and a laid-back resort. Green Island is a true coral cay, flatter and smaller, ringed by a sandy beach and known for its boardwalks and marine attractions.
Getting There
Fitzroy Island is around a 45-minute ferry ride from Cairns. You can read the full ferry details on our How to Get to Fitzroy Island guide.
Beaches and Snorkelling
Fitzroy Island is home to Nudey Beach, regularly voted one of Australia’s best. The fringing reef is accessible straight off the beach — perfect for snorkelling. Green Island’s reef is a little further out but its coral cay setting is unique.
Things to Do
Fitzroy Island wins for variety: hiking, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. See the full list on our Things to Do page.

Which Island Should You Choose?
Choose Fitzroy Island if you want variety, walking trails, a quieter feel and the option to stay overnight. Choose Green Island if you prefer a compact coral cay you can circle on foot. If you’re staying over, browse our Fitzroy Island Accommodation options.
